How to play Octordle

Octordle puts eight hidden five-letter words on screen at once and gives you thirteen guesses to solve all of them. Every word you type is played against all eight boards simultaneously — one guess, eight verdicts, and one row gone from every board whether it helped or not.

1. Type a real five-letter word and press Enter. Guesses the dictionary does not recognise are rejected without costing a row.
2. Read the whole screen, not one board. The same word usually lands green somewhere, yellow somewhere else and grey on the rest. Working out what the greys have eliminated matters more here than anywhere else.
3. Solve all eight before guess thirteen. Boards lock as they are solved and stop consuming your attention, but never your rows.

What the colours mean

• Green — right letter, right position, on that board.
• Yellow — the letter is in that word, in a different position.
• Grey — the letter is not in that word.

With eight boards running, the keyboard becomes the most efficient thing on the page. Every key is cut into eight slices matching the eight boards, so a single letter shows you at a glance which words have it, which do not, and which are still undecided.

Octordle strategy

Thirteen guesses for eight words sounds generous and is not. Eight of those rows are already spoken for simply by needing one correct answer per board, which leaves five to actually work with. Everything below is about protecting those five.

• Burn the first three guesses on the alphabet. Something like AROSE, UNTIL, PYGMY covers fifteen distinct letters including every vowel. Openers with repeated letters waste a slot you cannot spare.
• Do not cash in early. A board you can already see will still be there in four guesses. Spending a row on it now buys one board; spending that row on your emptiest board buys information about all eight.
• Rank the boards, then work bottom-up. Around guess seven, sort the unsolved boards by how much you know. Aim at the least-known one and let the near-certain boards collect free letters in the background.
• Count before you close. Once guesses remaining equals boards remaining, exploration is over — every guess from that point must be an answer. Reaching that state with a board you still cannot name is how most rounds are lost.
• Use one word to split a family. When two boards are both down to -IGHT patterns, find a word containing several of the candidate letters rather than testing them one board at a time. It rarely wins a board outright and it almost always wins two.

What is Octordle Unlimited?

Octordle is eight games of Wordle stacked on top of each other. Eight hidden five-letter words sit on screen at once, every guess you type is played against all eight, and you have thirteen guesses to finish the lot. Unlimited means you can deal a new set whenever you like instead of waiting for tomorrow.

How many guesses do you get in Octordle?

Thirteen for eight words — five spare rows once every board has taken one. That budget is the whole game: it is generous enough to explore early and far too tight to guess a board at random.

How is Octordle different from Quordle?

Quordle is four words in nine guesses; Octordle is eight in thirteen. The extra boards do not just add work, they change the plan — with eight targets a guess that eliminates common letters is worth far more than one aimed at a single word.

Why does one key show eight colours?

Each key on the on-screen keyboard is split into eight slices, one per board, laid out in the same order the boards appear. Reading a single key tells you where that letter is confirmed, where it is still floating and where it has been ruled out — across all eight words at once.

Do all eight boards share the same guess?

Yes. There is one keyboard and one counter. Every word you enter fills a row on all eight boards, including the ones you have already solved and no longer need.

What order should I solve the boards in?

Leave the boards you can nearly see until late. A guess aimed at a board you already understand teaches you almost nothing about the other seven, whereas a guess aimed at your emptiest board passes over every other board for free. Switch to closing boards out once the guesses left roughly match the boards left.

I cannot see all eight boards at once — is that normal?

Yes. On a phone the boards sit two to a row and the grid area scrolls; on a wider screen all eight fit in view. If scrolling breaks your concentration, lean on the keyboard colours — they summarise every board without moving.

Do rejected guesses cost me a row?

No. A guess that is not in the dictionary is refused outright and nothing is used up, so there is no risk in trying a word you are unsure exists.
